BOLD is thrilled to host a reading with CB Mason, author of the dystopian YA novel Shattered, in conversation with Erin Hall, author of Dear Sylvia, Love Jane.
We’ll explore the world of Tessa Wright—a fractured future shaped by climate disaster and political unrest—alongside themes of grief, identity, and resistance. Expect a lively discussion on worldbuilding, writing YA dystopia today, and the emotional core driving Tessa’s journey, followed by audience Q&A.
Shattered (April 2025)
A fractured world. A hidden past. A future she never expected. When fourteen-year-old Tessa Wright’s idyllic life is shattered by a tragic accident that kills her family and forces her to leave the Wilds, she struggles with grief, mysterious memories, and navigating her new life.
Dear Sylvia, Love Jane
It’s 1943, San Francisco. And Molly Malone has secrets.
Between pretending to be the secretary of her own detective agency and late-night visits to her favorite gay club Whiskers (where a secret knock grants entry), Molly’s life is lived in the shadows.
But when distraught housewife Sylvia seeks help from a detective, Molly’s professional and personal life begin to merge.
When an up-and-coming politician reveals his plan to shutter gay clubs like Whiskers, Molly is concerned.
Then when bodies start appearing, Molly needs to act fast to save her friends and loved ones–old and new–from being the next victims.
Because Molly isn’t the only one with a secret.
CB Mason writes dystopian YA fiction exploring resilience, identity, and social change. Inspired by strong female characters and complex worlds, she draws on a richly varied life path. A Boise native and Linfield College graduate, she now lives near Portland, Oregon, with her husband and her collection of tea and wine.
Erin Hall (she/her) is a reader, writer, and vegan nacho enthusiast living in Portland. She’s the author of the Detective Molly Malone series, which begins with her debut novel, Dear Sylvia, Love Jane. Erin works as a marketing and content coach for small businesses and entrepreneurs, and spends weekends hiking, watching old movies, or doing deep dive research into obscure Oregon history.

BOLD is thrilled to host a reading with H.E. Wallace and Roi Qualls, authors of Points of Failure, Vol. 1: INTERWOVEN.
Join authors H.E. Wallace and Roi Qualls for an evening of dialogue regarding their debut novel, Points of Failure, Vol. 1: INTERWOVEN in which they explore themes of collective trauma and healing, spirituality, and how humanity can’t move forward without addressing its past.
Points of Failure, Vol. 1: INTERWOVEN
INTERWOVEN, the first volume in the Points of Failure series by H.E. Wallace and Roi Qualls, plunges us into a post-conflict world 250 years into the future when humanity faces its starkest choice: escape or perish. With only 85 years remaining before Earth can no longer support human life, the Umoja-19 mission to the center of the galaxy in search of a new home planet cannot fail. When things do not go as planned, Chief Scientist Dr. Tah Morant must figure out why. His investigation takes an unforeseen turn, but is complicated by personal tensions, childhood trauma, fickle friendships, and brittle intimacies of marriage. To make matters worse, he must steer clear of danger and political intrigue while navigating with a moral compass clouded by willful ignorance and personal revenge.
This isn't merely science fiction; it's a journey into social and personal transformation, the relentless pursuit of truth, and the deep spiritual strength required for our survival. It explores the complexities of human nature and the intricate cultural structures that persist even after war has been abolished.
INTERWOVEN reflects on our complicity, our courage, and the choices we face in shaping what comes next for planet Earth. This isn’t a dystopian warning or a utopian escape, but a vital call to self-examination and transformation, particularly in the face of the calamities– physical, cultural, spiritual, political– shaping our current reality.
Compelling stories have always captured H.E. Wallace’sattention. INTERWOVEN, her debut novel co-authored with Roi Qualls, ties together her love for a good story and the dream of writing one. She currently lives in a seaside Washington town near her mother who was the first to encourage her to write.
Roi Qualls first imagined INTERWOVEN in 2013, and the story stayed with him until he teamed up a decade later with co-author H.E. Wallace to bring it to life. He studied philosophy and education at Earlham College and built a career as a database architect. Roi lives in beautiful Yellow Springs, Ohio, with Linden, his wife of 45 years.
Arrive at 6:30 p.m. to grab a snack or drink. The event will start at 7:00 p.m.

BOLD is thrilled to host a reading with Elayne Shapiro, author of My Grandfather’s Trunk, Susan Storer Clark, author of An Uncharted World, and Maureen Hartman, author of Perception.
My Grandfather’s Trunk
Growing up in Tzfat at the turn of the twentieth century, Esther does not know what to expect when she marries Moshe, a trunk-maker with dreams of following his brothers to start a new life in America. Tzfat may not be perfect . . . but what about the challenges of the new world, so strange and so far from everything Esther and Moshe have ever known?
Those challenges, after all, are considerable—from the constant economic struggle of feeding and housing a growing family; to the pull of the modernity that threatens to unravel Esther and Moshe’s Jewish traditions; to the global crises of war and pandemic; and finally, to the terrible toll taken by mental illness.
Of course, there is joy and endurance, too—more than enough for Esther and Moshe’s story to be richly retold many years later. And the retelling in this book begins when a granddaughter finds a trunk that Moshe made, and is intrigued by its meticulous, old-world craftsmanship.
An Uncharted World
An Uncharted World is a novel of historical fiction, set in the sixteenth century, against the backdrop of the worldwide trade of enslaved people. It is set in West Africa, Brazil, Peru, Macau, and on the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. In 1574, a Yorùbá girl, Morayo, is captured near her home in what is now Nigeria. It is the beginning of a terrifying journey: slavery in Brazil, servitude in Peru, and capture by privateer Francis Drake on his way around the world.
Can Morayo regain her freedom? Is there any way she can get back to her home?
Meticulously researched and inspired by the true story of a real African woman, An Uncharted World is a tale of resilience is told through Morayo’s eyes, and through those of a wide range of characters: priests and pirates, aristocrats, freed slaves and the divine trickster Èṣù. It takes the reader around the world and into the uncharted depths of the human heart.
Perception
Mia Ellis returns to her hometown after her father suffers a debilitating stroke. If it weren't for her half-brother, TJ, she wouldn't have returned, for she has no love for her father. He'd gone to Haiti as a social scientist with an American NGO, then left after learning he'd be a father. But when Mia confronts him in his hospital bed, unable to express himself clearly, he motions clumsily to the table beside him and says what she thinks is "All There."
This leads her to a cache of his personal journals, which take Mia on an unexpected journey that unravels the complexities of love and redemption. As she delves into his private thoughts, Mia uncovers a father she never knew, shaped by his own secrets and regrets.
PERCEPTION, the second book in the SPIRIT series, is a poignant exploration of family, forgiveness, and the untold stories that bind us together.
Elayne Shapiro is a graduate of the University of Illinois, served as a Peace Corps Volunteer, and has an MA and PhD in Communication from the University of Minnesota. She taught in the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Portland for thirty years. In addition to academic articles and a text, Reading the Bible; Transforming Conflict, Shapiro gave workshops in conflict management and family communication. She mediated in Small Claims Court for thirteen years and has volunteered as a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) for eleven years.
My Grandfather’s Trunk is historical fiction. Based on a family secret Shapiro observed in her own extended family, it explores issues of class, ethnicity, and mental health in a twentieth-century Jewish immigrant community.
Susan Storer Clark reads history and asks questions. She started when she was a child and continued to do so while she was working on her advanced degree in sixteenth-century history from King’s College London. She asked questions for a living as a broadcast journalist for about 25 years, working at such places as WRC-TV in Washington, DC, and the Voice of America. She and her husband Rich currently live in the Seattle area, where she tends her garden and sings in three different musical groups.
Susan writes about resilient women facing powerful social and cultural obstacles. An Uncharted World is her second novel of historical fiction.
Maureen Hartman was born and raised in Wisconsin but has been an Oregonian for four decades (plus or minus) and enjoys all the advantages of living in the Pacific Northwest. She loves to hike, kayak, cross-country ski, garden, and, of course, write. She is currently working on the third novel in her SPIRIT series, about a small Midwestern town wrestling with the rise of a right-wing movement.
Arrive at 6:30 p.m. to grab a snack or drink. The event will start at 7:00 p.m.

BOLD is thrilled to host a reading with Jennie Bricker, author of Thirsty Creek, and Cindy Brown, author of Echoes of the Lost.
Thirsty Creek,an ecological murder mystery set in the Wallowa Mountains
The bright red fish are gone from a sportsfishing destination lake in Oregon’s Wallowa Mountains, and the Nez Perce Tribe and the government want to know why. Science consultant Jess MacKinnon tears into the mountains on her motorcycle to solve the mystery. She takes the place of a government biologist, Ben Fletcher, who drowned in that very same lake. Jess knew Ben, and not just professionally—but that’s a secret. Jennie Bricker talks about her debut novel and the real-world ecological catastrophes it's based on.
Echoes of the Lost
One retired detective. One frightened boy. One daring librarian. The case that will unravel everything. A tense, emotional mystery perfect for fans of Michael Connelly and Liz Moore.
He usually had something to go on: a body, a name, a weapon . . . What did he have now?
Retired detective Ster McCaffrey has lived in isolation since the death of his beloved wife. Recently disabled from a traumatic brain injury, his quiet life is interrupted when he wakes in the dead of night to find a child sobbing on his doorstep--leaving him with more questions than answers.
After learning that the boy and his missing mother are unhoused with no official investigation underway, Ster decides to solve the mystery himself. To do so, he'll need to interview a community whose voice is rarely heard: the houseless of Portland, Oregon. Diving deeper into their tight-knit circle, Ster realizes trust is hard-won, and answers even more so. The further he goes, the more difficult it is to tell where the case ends, and his past begins.
With threats to his home, new evidence found in the river, and signs pointing to murder--friends and enemies are closer than Ster realizes. Only one thing is clear: the boy is in grave danger.
For fans of Cindy Brown's Macdeath, now comes a fresh take on classic crime thrillers.
Jennie Bricker lives in Portland, Oregon, where she splits her time between practicing natural resources law and writing fiction. Thirsty Creek is her debut novel.
Cindy Brown writes about justice and community. She has nine traditionally published books, an Agatha Award nomination, a dozen plays, and a disability journalism fellowship under her belt. Cindy and her husband live in their favorite city in the world, Portland, Oregon.
Arrive at 6:30 p.m. to grab a snack or drink. The event will start at 7:00 p.m.
